DAVAO DEL NORTE: The local government unit (LGU) here will implement an “Adopt A Tribal Family” program that would allow generous Filipino families to enter into a partnership with the LGU in sponsoring one tribal family. The program, proposed by Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) Chairman Emmanuel Piñol, aims to help disadvantaged tribal families in Mindanao, who only rely on subsistence farming to make a few hundred pesos for food.

Piñol said the Davao del Norte LGU will provide each sponsored family with a prefabricated house worth P80,000 while the sponsoring family will be asked to provide a counterpart amount of P50,000 to be used for their livelihood projects such as raising free-range chickens, native pigs, vegetables and fruit trees.

The sponsoring families will also be asked to donate clothing and old houseware, including items for the school needs of young tribal children, Piñol said. MinDa will assist in providing a profile of each sponsored family and a database that will give sponsors updates on the progress of the families. It will submit the blueprint of the “Adopt A Tribal Family” program to the governor’s office for the approval of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan and for subsequent implementation.
