Gaisano eyes Davao expansion

A HOMEGROWN retail company is set to expand five more country-mall type stores in Davao Region.
John Gaisano, chief executive officer (CEO) of JHG Trading Inc. and president of the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc., said at the sidelines of Wednesday's edition of Club 888 Media Forum at the Marco Polo Hotel Davao that they are eyeing to open five mall-type stores in Compostela Valley in two years time.
"We are planning to open some five retail malls in Comval (Compostela Valley) since we have other five properties there, but maybe in two years time," he said.
Gaisano refused to elaborate, saying they are still finalizing the planned expansion.
JHG Trading Inc. or JS Gaisano Inc. operates some of the leading malls in the region.
Gaisano said five areas where the new country mall type stores will be located are in the municipalities of Compostela, Monkayo, Mawab, Maragusan and New Corella.
Compostela Valley Boardmember Augusto S. Blanco Jr. in a separate interview cited the presence of big plantations in the province as main reason for investors to put up shops in the area.
"More establishments are being set up in the province because Comval is promising, with its resources. Big plantations are also there," he said.
Meanwhile, Blanco also said that Comval is around 90 percent in recovery after Typhoon Pablo which destroyed some P3.37 billion in property in the province.
"In the Banana industry, of the 2,300 hectares devoted to banana plantation, 10 percent of which are not yet planted with new ones but we expect that it will fully recover before the year ends," Blanco said.
He also added that Comval is also a potential area for rubber, palm oil, among others.
