THE SM group said over the weekend that the occupancy rate of its Park Inn hotel Davao has reached 70 percent in about five months since it opened in March following the launch of an aggressive promotion campaign to attract city tourists.

Geir Sikko, Park Inn Davao general manager, said the 204-room hotel has increased its market share with its bed-and-breakfast in volume.

“We are gradually increasing our market share as we have good conversion and returning guests from our corporate and groups residential meetings,” Sikko said.

About 90 percent of Park Inn’s visitors, however, were locals but it expects to increase the share of those from other areas in the country due to the continued increase in tourist arrivals to Davao. Last year domestic travelers to Davao, the country’s second-largest city by size, reached 1.48 million, 40 percent higher than the 889,6445 recorded a year ago.

Foreign visitors reached 81,911, or 27 percent higher than the previous year’s 59,859.

Sikko said the opening of the SMX Davao Convention Center, located in front of Park Inn, is expected to encourage more meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibition activities in Mindanao that will benefit the hotel.

Park Inn is in a 10-hectare lot in Lanang District, which is still being developed further by the SM Group.

The expected increase in domestic and international flights to and from Davao resulting in more business and tourist arrivals will also be good for the business, Sikko said.

The hotel is the first Park Inn by Radisson brand in the Asia-Pacific region, under the hotel portfolio of hotelier Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group, the largest mid-market brand for hotels under development in Europe.

Park Inn has become the official partner of the SM Group envisioned as a businessman’s hotel beside SM’s shopping malls nationwide.

Cora Guidote, SM Investments Corp. investor relations and corporate communications head, said there are a total of five Park Inn hotels that will be put up in the coming years.

Already in the pipeline is a Park Inn hotel that will be established beside SM Clark in Pampanga.
