Davao rugby team to make int'l debut

Mindanao's first and official Davao Durian Rugby team is all set to make its debut in the 10th Inaugural International Invitational Fatboy 10's on Saturday in Clark, Pampanga.

The ten-man team will compete against 15 teams from all over the Asia-Pacific region for the first time in a 10's format.

The Dabawenyos will expect tight contest against the Manila Nomads, Asian Barbaric Rams, CBRE Mavericks, Pot Belly Lites, Polenesian Panthers, Alabang Eagles, HKCC, Clark Rugby Jets, Taipei Baboons, HKFC Bulls, Manila Hapons, Pot Bellied Pigs, Cebu Dragons, Manila Carabaos, and MAAP.

Rugby team's development officer Blessie Kate delos Santos, speaking in Thursday's Davao Sportswriter's Association Forum at Dexter's Pizza Stadium in Matina, said: "Our team is the baby of the tournament since this is only the first time we will be competing outside Davao City."

The team is composed of team captain EJ Santos, Zedrick Lalisan, Rom John Gilbang, Jim Lendl Semilla, Jan Lawrence Olaco, Ronie Jauod, Le Allen Lara, Denniel Butcon, Mark Jumawid, Jovanie Sebuja, Jofern Coleto, John Kenneth Cabrera, Hiroshi Susuki, and Quino Flores II.

Japanese rugby founder in Davao and head coach Daijiro Muto will lead the team in the said tournament.

Santos said, "We expect to experience real rugby games since we will be playing against strong teams like the Manila Nomads and Taipei Baboons."

He added that aside from the experience, they hope to also bring honor for the city.

The team departs for Pampanga Friday.
