SOUTHEAST Asian (SEA) Games-bound Iris Rañola of Zamboanga City confirmed her participation in the 4th Sun.Star Superbalita/Phoenix Petroleum Philippines Inc. Mindanao Open 9-Ball Challenge on November 26 and 27 at the NCCC Mall B3 Center. Rañola, a 2009 Arizona Women's Billiards Tour Stop champion, was personally invited as seeded guest player by Sun.Star Davao Publishing Inc. general manager and 9-ball over-all chair Tessie Paña Tuesday evening at NCCC Mall where the renowned Filipina cue artist was playing in the ongoing San Miguel Beer Open 9-Ball regional qualifying.

"I'm very honored to take part in the Superbalita 9-Ball since it is a tournament for Mindanao players just like me. I really look forward to it," the 35-year-old Divisoria native said.

The current world no. 40 player will join past champions Gandy Valle, Christopher Alanunay and reigning champion Val Pajuay Jr. in the quarterfinal round of the Open tournament that offers P75,000 to the titlist.

Rañola is the only woman player so far to be seeded in the Superbalita 9-Ball. Roberto "Superman" Gomez and Elmer Haya were also guest players in past editions.

"Having a female player in the cast of dominantly male field is very welcome. It is very interesting that we are also opening a girls/women's event as part of our youth categories," Paña said.

Rañola will compete in the women's 9-ball and 8-ball singles alongside former world women's champion Rubilen Amit in the biennial Games set in Indonesia on November 11 to 22.

Rañola aims to improve her 9-ball bronze finish in the 2009 Laos SEA Games. She was a main draw player of the recently concluded Women's World 9-Ball event.

Rañola's other feats include a victory in the 2009 2nd Annual Oklahoma State Women's 9-Ball Championship in the USA and a runner-up finish in the US Open Billiards Tournament.

The Superbalita 9-Ball, backed by Alaxan FR and Enevervon, also has elementary, secondary and college divisions. Registration is free although participants will have to submit 15 Superbalita mastheads and certification of enrollment from their school principal or registrar.

In the open division, entry fee is P500 plus 10 Superbalita mastheads inclusive of official playing polo shirt.

Registration is ongoing in the event co-presented by Phoenix Petroleum Philippines, Inc. with Alaxan FR and Enervon Multivitamins as patron sponsor.

Interested players may sign up at Sun.Star Davao office, Rooms 5 and 6, Granland Bldg., R. Castillo St, Agdao, Davao City.

Out-of-town players born and residing in Mindanao may register at NCC Mall on November 25.
