"The BRT system specifically makes use of buses to provide faster and more efficient service than an ordinary bus line," Magnaye said.
"Often this is achieved by making improvements to existing infrastructure, vehicles and scheduling, the goal of these systems is to approach the service quality of the light railway transit while still enjoying the cost, savings and flexibility of the bus transit," Magnaye added.
Davao City has been eyeing the viability of putting up a mass transit system to overhaul its antiquated transport system consisting of public utility jeepneys. More than a decade has past when the city expressed interest in pursuing the proposal, yet no rail transit investment has materialized.
Magnaye says that the cheaper BRT would be a more viable and achievable investment in the city.
The BRT proposal has been submitted to Mayor Duterte but the local executive has not yet decided on the matter.
Among the cities in the country, Cebu City is eyeing to put in place a BRT system by 2013. (PIA XI)
