MATANAO, Davao del Sur, Philippines – Two candidates in the barangay (village) elections were killed in separate stabbing incidents in Barangay (village) Asbang, the police said Saturday.

The incidents, which took place on Friday afternoon, appeared to be tied to each other, the police said. Senior Inspector Charlie Merca, Matanao chief of police, identified the first victim as re-electionist village councilor Antonio Dominguez, 45.

Merca said Dominguez asked some neighbors who were singing at a videoke machine of a Cerelo Ydime, to turn down the volume but got into a heated argument instead.

It was this juncture that the knife-wielding Fernando Minggong, 46, suddenly stabbed him dead.

A few hours later, Minggong’s cousin, Katong Minggong, 72, a candidate for the village council, was also stabbed dead by a nephew of Dominguez.
