Soldier, son killed as motorcycle rams police outpost in Maguindanao

A soldier and his son were killed in a vehicular accident in the southern Philippines over the weekend, police said Monday.

Army Private First Class Benjie Pio and his 19-year old son Vincent were onboard a motorcycle which accidentally hit a barricade of a police outpost in Tambo village, Sultan Mastura town in Mindanao region's Maguindanao province past 7 p.m., according to Senior Superintendent Marcelo Pintac, provincial police chief. The victims were on their way to their hometown in Cotabato city from Lanao del Sur province when the mishap happened.

No one from the detachment was injured. Policemen manning the outpost rushed the victims to a nearby hospital but they were declared dead upon arrival by attending physicians due to severe body and head injuries, Pintac said, adding an investigation is now being conducted to check reports that the police detachment was dimly-lit.
