DepEd, Davao Mayor Sara declares Palaro in Davao a success

DAVAO CITY - The Department of Education on Saturday gave Davao City's hosting of Palarong Pambansa 2019 a perfect 10.
This despite minor complaints concerning some facilities including the yet to be finished construction of the Davao City - UP Mindanao Sports Complex.
DepEd Undersecretary Revsee Escobedo said they were satisfied with the way the host prepared the playing venues and billeting quarters for the athletes.
"Although hindi pa tapos (ang ilang facilities), but we are truly satisfied with the playing venues of the host, at 'yung billeting quarters, malalaki tong mga schools. Very comfortable 'yung mga billeting quarters ng mga regional delegations," he said.
Escobedo also addressed the complaint of Eyzell Balbuena who took to social media regarding the lack of amenities at the aquatic center.
"Swimmers had to stay under the bleachers, and had to bear the grueling heat. Parents had to stand at the bleachers without roofing and had to shield themselves from the scorching heat as well. There were not enough shower areas for swimmers. There were no toilets available, so we had to settle with portable toilets," Balbuena said in her Facebook Post.
"Although we still have improvements for the swimming pool, pero ganyan na man sa ibang mga aquatics facility. Never been in the history of Palarong Pambansa, na indoor 'yung swimming," Escobedo responded.
DepEd also commended the water supply in billeting quarters, as well as the tight security from law enforcers.
This amid the reported theft in a billeting area, wherein an outsider stole a bag and several cellphones from medal-winning boxers from Northern Mindanao.
The suspect was apprehended by policemen.
Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte also thanked the efforts of government agencies that ensured order and the safety of the student-athletes who participated in the Palaro.
"We thanked all of the offices from the city government of Davao and the national government worked together, including those in Philippine National Police and AFP. And also the support staff from other provinces in Davao region," she said.
"We are proud of what we have done because the last hosting of Davao City was in 1950."
The next Palarong Pambansa will be held in Occidental Mindoro in 2020.
