A town mayor was killed in an ambush in Davao del Norte early yesterday morning, the military said.

Capt. Alberto Caber, Eastern Mindanao Command (Eastmincom) spokesman, said Mayor Reynaldo Navarro of Laak, Compostela Valley province, was on his way to Davao City when armed men ambushed his convoy as they reached Barangay Sagayen, Asuncion, Davao del Norte, around 9 a.m. yesterday.

Navarro was declared dead on arrival at a hospital in Tagum City, authorities said.

The military said two more people were also killed in the incident but they are still verifying if they are with the mayor’s group or among the suspects.

“Soldiers of 60IB and the Philippine National Police (PNP) are now in the area to conduct investigation and joint operations,” said Caber.
