Davao to spend P5.4M a month on 'tanods'

The City Government of Davao is planning to spend additional P5.46 million a month for an estimated 910 village watchmen or "tanods" who will be tasked in preventing robbery incidents in their barangays.
In a meeting last week, Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte said the city will be hiring five barangay tanods per village and will pay them a monthly allowance of P6,000. He said the five tanods per barangay will undergo training and will be tasked mainly in preventing crime incidents in their respective barangays.
The mayor said it is time for the village watchmen to level up and strengthen their security measures in their area.
"We have to give them more police power. It's written in our book that whoever assists the mayor in the peace and order maintenance will also become the agent of a person with authority. I will give them an authority to apprehend or what is better," said Duterte.
Duterte said he will also study the possibility of giving firearms to the tanods so they could protect their areas better.
The decision to arm the tanods stemmed from the series of robberies in several barangays the past month.
