A forward truck collided with a passenger bus Tuesday morning on a rain-swept highway in Barangay Ilang, Tibungco, Davao City, killing one person and injuring 21 others, including the drivers of both vehicles.

Figuring in the road accident that occurred around 6:20 a.m. along Km. 16 were a Metro Shuttle bus and an Isuzu trailer truck owned by a certain Isidro "Boy" Uy.

The fatality was identified as Robert Sumampong, 29, who was seated at the front seat of the bus.

The driver of the Metro Shuttle, Rogelio Enclonar, and the driver of the truck, Armand Lopez, were in critical condition as of this posting.

The other injured victims have yet to be identified.

Based on initial investigation conducted by SPO2 Arnel Masauding of the Bunawan police, the Metro Shuttle Bus was on its way to Tagum City coming from the Davao City Overland Transit Terminal (DCOTT) while the truck was coming from the north.

Masauding said the truck swerved to the opposite lane to try to overtake a vehicle ahead. The truck driver, however, lost control and bumped the front end of the bus, instantly killing Sumampong.

The injured victims were rushed to the Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC).

Davao Metro Shuttle Bus vice president Rudy Alag assured to cover the medical expenses of the passengers wounded. He also vowed to provide financial assistance to the family of Sumampong.

Police are still conducting further investigation to identify who is at fault in the incident.

If proven guilty, the drivers of the bus and truck will face charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide, multiple physical injuries and damage to property.
