Ten Mindanao-based seafood companies have been invited to the world’s largest seafood trade event in Belgium, according to the Mindanao Development Authority (Minda) "This is not just an opportunity to showcase Mindanao''s best seafood products," Minda Chairwoman Luwalhati Antonino said in a statement Friday. "Our participation in this exposition also sends a strong signal that we have the ability to seize business opportunities in an increasingly global economy.”

The European Seafood Exposition in Brussels, which starts May 3, will gather 1,600 importers, food retailers, supermarket representatives, agents and distributors, hotel and restaurant suppliers, and food service and catering organizations from at least 76 countries. It is considered the largest seafood trade event in the world, Antonino said.

She said the invitation extended to the Mindanao companies was proof of their product quality, volume capacity and compliance with internationally recognized Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) and EU plant certification standards.

The participating companies, which were being assisted by the US-funded Growth with Equity in Mindanao, include Ayala Seafoods Corp., Bluefin Seafood Export, FAB Sea Resources Corp., Jess Aquamarine Traders, Jarla Trading, MS Seafood Supplier, Nuevo Fresco, Rdex Food International Phils. Inc., Well Delight Network Corp., and JN Mercado Food Supply.

Based on government data, seafood products have been among the top 10 Mindanao exports for two years now.

In 2009, Mindanao''s total direct exports of seafood products, including seaweed and tuna, to the European Union alone were valued at $153 million.
