IN LINE with the World Water Day on March 22, water service provider Davao City Water District (DCWD) mounted the first-ever World Water Day Photo Contest at SM City Davao last March 18.

The contest was participated in by nine different government agencies. It has the theme "Water and Energy." Entries to the Photo Contest will be on display at SM City Davao until March 23 at the Annex.

The international observance of the Water Day is done to focus global attention on the importance of water and advocating for the sustainable management of water resources. The World Water Day was recommended to be celebrated in 1992 by the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development held in Rio, Brazil.

SM City Davao, on the other hand, has been implementing water efficiency practices.

The mall operates a wastewater treatment facility that ensures that water is clean before it is released.

Also, 70 percent to 80 percent of the treated waste water is used for toilet flushing and the mall's cooling tower facility. To date, SM Davao is able to recycle more than 400,000 cubic meter of water.

Apart from its water efficiency program, SM also carries out programs for energy efficiency, air quality, and solid waste management.

The mall also empowers its business partners and clients to take part in promoting the environment through its projects on Eco Bags, Recycling Market/ Trash to Cash every first Friday and Saturday of the month and participating in the Earth Hour.

Earth Hour celebration will be on March 29. Shoppers may bring in their recyclables at the next Trash to Cash event on April 4 and 5 at the mall's Open Parking.
