At least 100 families lost their homes after a fire hit a residential area in the Island Garden City of Samal in Davao del Norte Thursday afternoon. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said the incident occurred at 4:30 p.m. at Sitio Libdan in Barangay Pichon in the Babak district.

While no one was initially reported injured, the NDRRMC said in its 6 a.m. report Friday that 30 houses were damaged.

It added the 100 families affected by the fire were brought to the Angel Villarica Elementary School where they will be temporarily sheltered.

The NDRRMC said the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council distributed relief assistance to the victims.

Firefighters from Samal, Naval forces in Eastern Mindanao, the Coast Guard, Task Force Samal and the Davao del Norte provincial disaster risk reduction and management council helped put out the fire.

Arson investigators are still determining what caused the fire, the NDRRMC said.
