THE 3rd Davao Mega Travel Sale opened Friday at the Activity Center of Abreeza Mall with organizers offering special promotional packages to travel enthusiasts during the sale period. Krizia Tan, president of the organizing Davao Travel Agencies Association (DTAA), said some 60 exhibitors, including travel agencies, are participating in the three-day event, which ends on March 4.

Tan said most of the exhibitors are from Manila and Cebu as only 20 of them come from Davao.

"It's good to know that they do believe in the Davao market. That we have potential," Tan said.

During the three-day event co-organized by the Davao Association of Tour Operators, participating airlines, tour operators, cruise, hotels and resorts from both local and national offer big discounts to travel bugs.

"It's an opportunity for them (travel enthusiasts) to really get low rates," Tan said.

The 3rd Davao Mega Travel Sale opened with a program Friday morning, with no less than Consul General Eko Hartono of the Indonesian Consulate, Tourism Congress president Celine Clemente, city officials and other tourism stakeholders in attendance.

"We have organized this mega event and placed it at the heart of the city so our local travel agencies get the opportunity to be known, and present the various attractive travel packages we offer to the public that is increasingly becoming hungry to achieve a much wider view of the Philippines and the world," Tan said in her welcome remarks.

Davao City Mayor Inday Sara Duterte was not around but she sent a message to the organizers through her chief-of-staff Lemuel Ortonio.

"The DOT campaign 'It's more fun in the Philippines' and the city's own campaign 'Life is here' are not directed exclusively towards foreign tourists. It is also an invitation to all Filipinos to go all out and discover the rest of the country," Duterte said in her message read by Ortonio.

"Domestic travel must drive the country's tourism industry, so I urge all Dabawenyos to take this opportunity to book your travels. Let us enrich our loves by exploring Mindanao, the country and the world," she added.

Clemente lauded the organizers led by DTAA and stakeholders for coming up and supporting the activity which, she said, will really help promote tourism.

"We believe that the tourism industry will be brighter, better not only for Davao but also to all stakeholders in the country," Clemente said.

"Congratulations to all of you Dabawenyos. You are really one of a kind," Clemente added.

Tan said the sale expo is also backed by the Surabaya, Sabah and Malaysia tourism boards, while guests from Singapore are also presently in Davao event.

One of the highlights of the event is the staging of the Mr. and Ms. Travel Ambassador competition, which will be participated in by various tourism and human resource management schools in the city.
