At least 77 bricks of cocaine worth more than P500 million were burned in Davao City Monday.

Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte led the burning and destruction of the bricks of cocaine that were confiscated. At least 16 of the cocaine bricks were confiscated by authorities in 2009 while the remaining 61 bricks were recently seized at the container yard of Sumifru Company.

The bricks of cocaine had a total weight of 80 kilos, Duterte said.

“I am happy and I congratulate everybody for a job well done,” Duterte said.

The burning and destruction of the cocaine bricks were also witnessed by top officials of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) headed by Assistant Secretary Rene Orbe.

Orbe told reporters that the burning of the bricks of cocaine aims to erase the notion that there is recycling of dangerous drugs in the agency.
