The number of fire incidents in Region 11 climbed to 188 in January to May this year from 169 in the same period in 2011, said Fire Insp. Nestor Jimenez of the Bureau of Fire Protection. Speaking at the Kapehan sa Davao press conference on Monday here, Jimenez said of the 188 fire incidents in five months this year, 85 happened in Davao City. These were mostly caused by electrical faulty wiring while the rest were open flames like liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), among others.
He said BFP Davao also inspected a total of 129 boarding houses in the region last May and sent notices to correct certain violations to about 69 boarding houses, three of which are in Davao City.
The violations involved substandard electrical wirings and no fire exits. The boarding houses were requested to comply with the correction to a minimum of 24 hours to a maximum of 15 days, he said.
On the other hand, Jimenez said 116 public schools inspected in the region were also mandated by the Bureau of Fire and Protection to correct certain violations. Among the violations include use of substandard electrical cords, no fire alarm facilities, and no exit ladders.
Of the number, 29 schools are in Davao City, 51 in Davao del Sur, seven in Davao del Norte, eight in Compostela Valley Province, and 21 in Davao Oriental, Jimenez said.
At the onset of school days, he said the Bureau is undergoing massive inspections of residential structures, schools, both private and public and boarding houses thru its Balik Eskwela Program.
However, latest inspection update recorded no hazardous buildings in Davao City.
“If the Bureau tracks hazardous buildings, it will endorse the list to the Davao City government for appropriate action,” Jimenez said.
