The Davao City Council passed an ordinance on Tuesday mandating the wearing of face mask in public places.

The move of the Sangguniang Panglungsod is upon the order of Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio in a bid to prevent the spread of coronavirus disease 2019 or COVID-19.

Violators face a fine of P500 for the first offense and P2,000 for the second offense.

A fine of P5,000 or one month imprisonment or both will be imposed for third time violators.

Carpio said health experts advised the wearing of face mask in public places to lower the chance of getting infected or infecting others with COVID-19.
