Davao hosts PBaRS third leg

Davao takes its turn to host the MVP Sports Foundation-Bingo Bonanza Philippine Badminton Ranking System (PBaRS) tournament with a banner field from the Mindanao region expected to join the title hunt in the third leg on July 30-Aug. 3 at the Wheels and More badminton courts. Winners in the first two legs brace for a showdown with a slew of local talents in the five-day tournament staged to provide the country’s leading players and rising stars a series of top-level tournaments and at the same time give those in the provinces the chance to compete against the best and gain ranking points.

Deadline for registration is on July 16 at 5 p.m. at the PBaRS office (20. E. Maclang St. San Juan). For details, visit http://www.pbars.com.

Posting of entries on the website will be on July 18 while draw will be held on July 26 at 3 p.m. at the Valle Verde Country Club in Pasig City. The managers’ meeting is set July 29 in Davao.

The PBaRS series of nationwide tournaments is a project of Vice President and Philippine Badminton Association president Jejomar Binay, Rep. Albee Benitez and businessman-sportsman Manny Pangilinan in their collective effort to bring the sport to a higher level and produce world-class players.

Events on tap are the Open, Under-19 and Under-15 divisions in the men’s and ladies singles and men’s and ladies doubles and mixed doubles categories.

Manila and Bacolod leg Open men’s singles champion Antonino Gadi along with Manila leg Open singles winner Bianca Carlos and Bacolod champion Malvinne Ann Alcala are again expected to lead the title chase in the third leg along with members of the national pool and age-group winners Joper Escueta, Joella de Vera, Markie Alcala and Samantha Ramos.

The nationwide circuit winds up with the VP Grand Prix Badminton Open Championships on Oct. 22-29 in Manila.
