City targets 5,000 new jobs in IT-BPO industry

About 5,000 jobs are expected to be added to the Information Technology- Business Process Outsourcing (IT-BPO) industry in Davao City. Bert Barriga, President of ICT Davao, an umbrella organization of IT groups in Davao City, said that with the present 16,000 IT-BPO workforce in the city by year’s end they are hoping it would go up by 21,000.
Barriga said that big call centers will be locating in the city declining to name these companies as a matter of policy among investor locators. One of the companies will be located at the soon-to-be-completed Abreeza Corporate Center.
Last year, the city added 5,000 more jobs to the IT BPO industry with the opening of BPO companies such as VXI Global whose contact center is located at Robinsons Cybergate in Bajada.
VXI Global required about 3,500 agents alone. The company which occupies a 5,000 square meter contact center facility is one of the biggest BPO companies doing business in the city.
“Many existing companies here are adding people.” Barriga describing the expansion of existing contact centers and the coming of new locators as contributing to a heightened demand for IT workers in Davao City.
The ICT Davao prexy said that the biggest impact with the expanding companies and the new locators is providing job opportunities here in the region. Barriga cited that a 5,000 square meter contact center would have around 1,000 seats. multiplied by three shiftings these would translate to an initial need for 3,000 contact center agents.
Barriga said that ICT Davao is looking at having 35,000 IT-BPO workforce in Davao City by 2015.
