Six people were killed in an accident on a southern Philippine highway today, police said.

The accident happened when a snack food delivery van rammed into a passenger jeepney parked around 12:30 p.m. on the national highway. The two vehicles fell off to a river, said Superintendent Giusseppe Geralde, city police chief. Five victims, including the drivers of the two vehicles, were injured, Geralde told Xinhua by telephone, adding that the van driver was subject to alcohol test on suspicion of drunk driving.

The driver also faces charges of reckless imprudence resulting to multiple homicide, said Geralde.

Severe road accidents involving multiple casualties are common in the Philippines due to poor road conditions, lack of maintenance of vehicles, overspeeding, drunk driving, among others. Those accidents claim hundreds of lives every year, according to police.
