Davao Oro quake aftershocks hit 1,258

Up to 1,258 aftershocks of the magnitude 6.0 quake that struck Davao de Oro were recorded as of 2 p.m. yesterday.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said three of the quakes were felt while 87 were plotted or recorded by three or more earthquake monitoring stations.
Phivolcs said the aftershocks had magnitudes ranging from 1.3 to 4.5.
The magnitude 6.0 quake struck two kilometers south of Compostela at 6:44 p.m. on Feb. 1.
The shaking was felt strongest at Intensity 6, which is classified as very strong, in Compostela, Mawab, Monkayo, Montevista, Nabunturan and New Bataan in Davao de Oro as well as in Asuncion, Carmen, Kapalong, New Corella, Island Garden City of Samal, San Isidro, Sto. Tomas and Tagum in Davao del Norte.
Phivolcs said damage and more aftershocks were expected from the quake.
The agency said Davao de Oro, which has several active faults, has been hit since 1891 by nine strong earthquakes with magnitudes that ranged from 6.0 to 8.3.
