After days of rain and flooding, the sun finally shone in Davao del Norte and on the thousands of athletes, coaches, spectators, and organizers who have been preparing for the 2013 Davao Region Athletic Association (DAVRAA) for months now. “I have invited Senator Pia Cayetano to open the facility which she ground broke before,” Davao del Norte Governor Rodolfo del Rosario said during a press conference held Monday morning a few hours before the official opening of the DAVRAA.

The organizers were worried about the outdoor events for the DAVRAA considering the continuous rains last week and the flooding in most municipalities in the province. However, the weather has improved with no adverse advisory from the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

Del Rosario said he expects more than 5,000 from Southern Mindanao’s six cities and four provinces including their coaches and officials to converge in Mankilam where the 11-hectare Davao del Norte Sports and Cultural Facility is located.

“I feel like I am up in the heavens and floating in the sky,” del Rosario said, clearly elated over the completion of the sports complex and the hosting of the DAVRAA.

Department of Education (DepEd) 11 Regional Director Gloria D. Benigno said this is the first world-class sports and cultural facility in the region and this increases the region’s chances of hosting other sports events including the Palarong Pambansa in 2015.

“We are glad that the devastation brought by Typhoon Pablo did not affect the participation of the children,” she said. Most of the DepEd Divisions in Compostela Valley and in Davao Oriental are sending a full contingent to the Palaro, she said.

DAVRAA, which serves as the elimination venue for those who want to compete in the Palarong Pambansa in Dumaguete City on April this year, features 18 sporting events. These events are: Arnis, Archery, Athletics, Badminton. Baseball, Basketball, Boxing, Chess, Football, Gymnastics, Lawn Tennis, Sepak Takraw, Sipa Takraw, Softball, Swimming, Taekwondo, Table Tennis, and Volleyball.

Benigno said there are 10 participating delegations from Davao del Norte, Tagum City, Panabo City, Island Garden City of Samal, Davao Oriental, Mati City, Davao del Sur, Digos City, Compostela Valley, and Davao City.

Del Rosario promised that the opening ceremony, which will be keynoted by Davao del Norte Representative Anthony del Rosario, will be very exciting for the participants and spectators as they await a scheduled fireworks display and a short parade of the athletes.
