A group of New People’s Army (NPA) rebels attacked Army troops engaged in a community service at a village in Davao del Norte resulting in the wounding of a soldier, the military said. Lt. Col. Joshua Santiago, 10th Infantry Division (10ID) spokesman, said the incident occurred this week at Barangay Mambing, New Corella, Davao del Norte where Peace and Development Teams (PDT) from 3rd SF Battalion were conducting community service.

Santiago said the soldiers encountered members of the Local Terrorist Front 33, Southern Mindanao Regional Committee (SMRC).

Logging companies in the area have been complaining of the rampant extortion activities by the NPAs, to which ordinary residents are not being spared.

According to Santiago, the firefight between the soldiers and the rebels lasted about 10 minutes resulting to one soldier wounded in action (WIA), identified as PFC Ernie A. Aguilar.

3rd SF Battalion commander Lt. Col. Ferdinand Napuli assured that the safety of the threatened civilian populace is protected by the soldiers.

“We are in full implementation of Peace and Development Outreach Program, and we continue our mission in protecting the defenseless civilians who only wanted to live in peace and harmony,” he said.

Napuli said the rebels engaged by the troops were the same group involved in the killing of three soldiers on their way to Barangay Magdum proper for PDOP activity on Jan. 6, three days after the holiday ceasefire implementation.
Napuli said at present, the PDOP effort of the 3rd SF Battalion caters to 20 barangays in New Corella and 23 barangays in Tagum City.
