A fire destroyed a house owned by former Maguindanao governor Andal Ampatuan Sr. here early Thursday morning, the authorities said.
Superintendent Antonio Rivera, spokesperson of the Davao City Police Office, said an investigation was still being conducted to determine what caused the fire at the Ampatuan house in the Marfori Subdivision here.

A Nissan Terrano was also damaged in the fire.

Inspector Rodolfo Alocelja, arson investigator of the Central Fire Station, said they were validating a report that a bottle that smelled of gasoline had been recovered from the fire scene.

He said only watchmen were in the house when the fire broke out.

Andal Ampatuan Sr. is one of the co-accused in the 2009 Maguindanao massacre of 58 people, mostly journalists.

He owns several houses here, including one in Juna Subdivision, an area where Davao's old rich once resided.
