Mayor Sara Duterte canceled her trip to Paquibato district here Sunday morning (not Monday as earlier reported) because of a landmine explosion that wounded a soldier, the military said. Lieutenant Colonel Joshua Santiago, spokesman of the 10th Infantry Division, said Duterte was already on her way to Paquibato proper for the city government's service caravan when the explosion took place around 6:30 a.m. Sunday.

Santiago said the New People’s Army planted the landmine that injured a soldier, who is part of the road security for the service caravan.

"The convoy of Mayor Sara Duterte was on its way to Paquibato when the landmine explosion took place, prompting the city government to cancel its planned outreach program," Santiago said.

Monday’s landmine explosion was the second in Paquibato since the start of the year.

On January 18, two soldiers died while eight other government troopers were injured when a landmine also exploded while they were pursuing NPA rebels following a brief clash in Paquibato district in Davao City.
