DAVAO City Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte has discouraged the holding of Christmas in parties among his workers and other City Hall offices in the wake of the catastrophe that struck Compostela Valley and Davao Oriental due to Typhoon Pablo. At the same time, Duterte said he won't accept Christmas gifts from friends and constituents this time. Instead, he urged them to donate whatever gift they would give to the affected residents of the two provinces.

"Ayaw na lang ko ninyo hatagi ana. Dili nako na kinahanglan (Just don't give me any gift. I don't need them)," Duterte said during his television program "Gikan sa Masa, Para sa Masa" aired last Sunday.

The vice mayor said he will appreciate any gift from friends, but would rather want them to donate these to those in need.

More than 1,000 residents from Compostela Valley and Davao Oriental lost their lives when Typhoon Pablo hit the Davao Region and some parts of Mindanao last December 4.

The vice mayor said he is planning to visit affected residents in Davao Oriental soon.

"We share your sadness," Duterte said. "One of these days, I will visit you."

Davao Oriental's three towns -- Boston, Cateel and Baganga -- were severely hit by the typhoon.

The vice mayor had visited Compostela Valley to extend the City Government's assistance.
