DEPARTMENT of Tourism (DOT)-Davao regional director Art Boncato remains optimistic of luring airline companies to mount Davao-South Korea direct flights.

Boncato, speaking in last Monday's regular "Kapehan sa Dabaw" forum at the SM Annex, said the strengthening of relationship between Davao and South Korea will eventually pave the way for the opening of this new route.

DOT had been negotiating with other international airline companies, which are potential players, to consider Davao as their destination.

He said the department is working on this possibility to boost the tourism industry of the city by establishing Davao as tourist destination for Koreans.

The DOT director had showed the proposal to Silkair, Airbus, Gin Air, Air Busan and Asiana.

DOT also considered the Korea travel Association in Cebu. Korean-Davao in particular will be largely affected if the proposal will be realized since it will build strong tie between the two.

At present, more wave of Koreans is considering Davao City as their place of residence or a place to visit.

Based on hotel record, 8,500 Koreans visited and stayed in Davao.

DOT, however, cannot give an exact number of Koreans in the region since this continually grows due to change of residency, their studies or consideration to make the city a place to put up business.

Working for the increasing in the number of flights to Davao is in compliance with the Philippine government's target of enticing 10 million tourists in 2016.
