Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte, in her speech, expressed her heartfelt gratitude to all courageous war veterans who risked their life to gain freedom from the Japanese invasion. "We honor these veterans who serve and contribute to liberate our country. Also, we recognize and give them thanks for their bravery that we can keep in our hearts for years to come and we only come to express it thru this day of commemoration," she said.

"This day also reminds us of their patriotism that each one of us must continue to keep on fire, the love for our country and the thousands of our freedom fighter who fought and died during the war. This freedom is their legacy to us and to our children," Duterte added.

One of them is Jose C. Adao, 86, a retired judge, who was teary eyed as he recalls the adversities of war.

"It's very difficult that time, I could not even see my family for months even years because of war but I am happy that I have reached this time of my life together with my family," he said.
